For over 5 years, Heatwave have been working with home and property owners across Northern England to make energy simple and affordable. Whilst our systems are at the very cutting edge of Solar PV technology, our business is built on traditional values such as complete honesty and friendly, personal service. A lot of companies make bold claims about the service they provide, but we're not afraid to keep things very simple. In fact, it boils down to three golden rules.

Real People

When you deal with Heatwave, you deal with Heatwave. This might sound obvious, but you'd be surprised how often that isn't the case. There is no middleman or external sales company when you deal with us which keeps the cost to you at a minimum.

Few investments can compete with the long-term value of Solar PV technology, but Heatwave is focused on delivering unbeatable value from the very start. We don't believe in jargon, gimmicks or pushy sales techniques - we simply offer high quality systems at prices that make investing in Solar PV worthwhile.

Even though we offer industry leading technology, some people might describe our attitude to service as old fashioned. We just don't believe in complicating matters. Solar PV is the future of domestic energy generation - and our entire team is here to make adopting it as easy, affordable and hassle-free as humanly possible.

About Solar

How Solar Panel Works

It might sound complicated, but Solar PV technology is actually rather simple. Solar panel cells are made from semiconducting materials such as silicon which are able to undergo a process called the 'photovoltaic effect'. This means that they absorb photons from sunlight and cause them to produce electrons. These electrons are captured as DC current and converted into domestic AC power through an integrated inverter.

Placing Your Panels

PV cells generate useable electricity whenever they are exposed to the sun's rays. This doesn't mean they have to be in direct sunlight however - you'd be surprised how many photons are available to be converted on even the dullest of days! For best results, panels should be tilted and between south east and south west facing. Once generated, power can be used immediately or sold automatically to the grid.

Planning Permission

Do I need planning permission to install Solar PV? In most cases - no. In England, Solar PV panels are considered to be 'general permitted development'. Of course, the rules are slightly different if your property is a listed building or within a conservation area, but even then installations are normally allowed provided certain guidelines are followed. Heatwave will advise you whether we think there might be a planning issue with your property, and may even be able to check on your behalf, but we always recommend speaking to your local planning office just to be sure.

Environmental Benefits

With the evidence to support climate change growing by the day, a long term strategy to encourage the reduction of carbon generation and the adoption of renewable energy sources is already underway - despite this period of austerity, you need only look at the Government's investment in schemes such as the Feed-in Tariff for evidence of this. Operating a typical 2kW/h Solar PV system will prevent around a ton of Co2 from entering the atmosphere each year.

Financial Benefits

To encourage the use of renewable energy, the Government has introduced the Feed-in Tariff - a tax-free, index linked, 25 year guaranteed scheme that pays homeowners 43.3p (39.6p from April 2012) for every kilowatt they self generate and 3.1p for every Kilowatt they export back to the grid. Given that a Solar PV system for an average home costs between £8k and £12k, and the Feed-in Tariff is engineered to return between 10% and 15% each year, break even is usually achieved within 8 to 10 years.

Reducing Your Bills

One of the key benefits of Solar PV is the dramatic effect it has on your home electricity bill. From the moment the system is installed, your bill will instantly reduce. By how much exactly depends on several factors, but it is proven that 'medium users' (3300kWh/pa) could see in excess of 33% cut from their bill. Imagine how much you could save over the next 25 years!

Safeguarding Against Raising Prices

Another key factor in your decision to invest in Solar PV is the fact that having a degree of self sufficiency will protect you from rises in the cost of electricity for the next 25 years. Given that the average household bill has doubled in the last five years, your savings are likely to increase even further as time passes and electricity costs continue to rise.

Improving Your Property

Simply put, investing in Solar PV is investing in the long term value of your home. Whilst the initial expense is not insignificant, a 2009 survey undertaken by the Energy Saving Trust discovered that 35% of people would be willing to pay more for a home that featured renewable energy technology. This figure is also set to grow as electricity prices continue to rise.

Easy Installation

Unlike many home improvements, Solar PV is quick and extremely hassle-free to install. The entire process usually takes a couple of days in most cases, and as our expert team will be working predominantly on the roof, the disruption to you will be very minimal. Indeed, the only time you notice your system being installed may be during the few minutes we'll need to interrupt your power whilst connecting up the Solar PV unit.

Warranties

Most of the solar panels we install come with a full 10 year Manufacturers Parts and Labour Warranty and a further Manufacturers Performance Warranty which guarantee's the performance of your solar panels for the full 25 year term.

What They Say

Andrew Ingham — Wigan

"If you'd asked me a few years ago, I'd never have imagined that I'd one day be generating my own electricity with solar power - after all, I live in Wigan which isn't known for its sunshine! All joking aside, I'd like to say a big thank you to Heatwave for making our transition to renewable energy to simple. I barely had to lift a finger, and the savings have been fantastic."

Sarah Hardy — Doncaster

"At work yesterday there was a big discussion about how expensive electricity had become in the last few years. Frankly, I was shocked by how much my colleagues were paying. We've been using Solar PV from Heatwave for twelve months now and it's turned out to the best investment we've ever made! Not only have our bills been cut in half, our carbon footprint has been too."

Mr S. Hussein — Chorley

"Nine months ago, my Wife persuaded me that Solar PV was a good investment. I must admit, I was initially sceptical but my concerns evaporated instantly when we received the first quarterly payment from the Government's Feed-In Tariff scheme. It's hard to believe that they're actually paying us to generate our own electricity! I'm normally suspicious when people claim that things 'pay for themselves', but it's impossible to deny how quickly we're recouping our investment."

Beverley Jones — Aintree

"When it came to selling our last house, it was incredible how much interest we received simply because of the Solar PV system. One man admitted that he'd arranged a viewing simply to take a closer look for himself. We'd expected selling to be a slow process due to the deflated market, but it took just eight weeks to receive an offer that matched the asking price. We can't wait for our new panels to be installed."

Tom Gaiman — Leeds

"I'd been looking to invest in Solar PV for a while, but had some off-putting experiences with pushy sales people from other companies. I was about to give up on the idea when I decided on a whim to speak to Heatwave. What a refreshing change! Not only did they know what they were talking about, they let me come to my own conclusions about their quote too. Great service. Thoroughly recommended."
